A Simple Understanding of on & Off Page Website Promotion

Making sometimes very subtle changes to your website can make big differences in your search engine ranking and in turn the amount of natural traffic from search engine keyword searches.

When considering where to spend your time in promoting your website for a good search engine ranking, ten percent of your time and efforts should be spent with on-site SEO and ninety percent with off-site SEO.

In other words your on-site efforts would be well spent organising your main keywords for the keyword meta tag, deciding on a suitable title meta tag for each of your sites page and also using the description meta tag and any other you think is necessary for your site. Changes made to the meta tags will make differences in your search engine ranking however these changes will usually take weeks for you to notice the benefit (if any) it made. This is similar also to changing keyword density in the body of the HTML.

The above is quick and easy to execute, however slow to update. The remaining ninety percent of your time should be promoting you site externally through others. Setting up affiliates for your product or service, arrange joint ventures, spread the word by email or virally – just create a buzz about it! Maybe set up a MySpace page or use social media sites to help gain momentum in addition to blogs and forums that are related to the content of your website.

Above all else, it is widely agreed that the single most important aspect of off-site promotion is obtaining backlinks. Other sites linking to yours creates an impression to the search engines that your site has some value to readers, enough in fact that others are linking to it and it must be important. Of course it is! There are numerous ways of getting backlinks to your site, however most are time consuming and it soon becomes an impossible job if you have a few sites to promote. Link building companies can help you with getting quality backlinks to your site for a fee and for long term growth and increasing page rank should be considered if you are limited for time and serious about your website.
